A marriage is threatened when the husband’s first love returns to town. The fundamental problem with this year’s PÖLP is that there were so few classic film screenings, let alone the number scheduled for PÖLP 2023. As an audience member, I was torn apart by a dominant number of green-handed new films that play with concepts and techniques, but whose extravagant shells contain few revealing and refreshing pieces. The lack of classic, time-tested films therefore leads to a lack of seasoning for my nerves. Among the new films, however, Out of Control, made by the mature director Le Ny, stands out as a solidly established, engaging and emotionally complex soother.
