Based on the novel Foregone by Russell Banks
Tale
Leonard Fife, one of the sixty thousand conscientious objectors and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid serving in Vietnam, reveals all his secrets to demystify his mythical life. This is the second time Paul Schrader has directed one of Banks’ novels for the big screen, after his adaptation of Affliction (1997).
I saw the film at the Cannes premiere
Quoted in the Film Junk podcast: Episode 961: In a Violent Nature + TIFF 2024 (2024). “OH, CANADA” is a very original film by one of the masters of cinema, a true work of art.
It has beautiful cinematography and excellent production design
The film is beautifully made and has a strong visual impact. The acting is strong, especially that of Richard Gere, who plays the protagonist.
It may not be for everyone, but I think it is one of Paul Schrader’s greatest achievements and a gift for film lovers
He delivers a terrific and unforgettable performance in the style of Jack Nicholson in FIVE EASY PIECES – a complicated character, not always sympathetic, but captivating. Recommended.
